Hey Gems,
Cheers to the month January & a NEW YEAR! Where are my HS Seniors, aspiring Seniors and their parents? This post is for you to keep you on track as you prepare to go off to the College you desire.

By now, you should have taken the SAT/ACT Test, possibly a few times, to acquire your best score for College admission. Not to mention putting your best effort to keeping your grades up for a competitive GPA and recommendations from your teachers.

Some Colleges accept applications as early as August of your Senior year, that is if you are applying for a special college program or a binding early admission agreement into the College of your first choice. Typically, most students apply for regular admission for the Summer or Fall semester.
We will be creating a checklist each month specifically for you! Here is the checklist for this month:
January Checklist for Regular College Admissions

Complete College Applications Before Deadline- Be sure to apply to the Colleges of your choice electronically via the College's website or a common application to as many Colleges via Commonapp.org. Please do so before the deadline! We don't want your application rejected because you failed to follow instructions. Each Application cost on average $30.
Complete FAFSA- We highly recommend for everybody, especially those in need, to complete the Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as it becomes available on January 1st! You never know how much you may qualify to receive in grants (free $ you don't payback) and/ loans ($ you payback). There is a saying "the early bird gets the most worm", this truly applies for the FAFSA. The government gives away as much money that is available until it runs out. So please don't wait until after February when funds are low. Though you think you may never need Financial aid, you never know if an unforeseen circumstance may happen in the future that may cause you to regret not applying. After all, you will be given the option to deny funds after approval if you no longer need it.
Apply for Scholarships- Yass! Apply, apply and apply for as many scholarships until most, if not all, of your college expenses are covered. This should be high on your priority list throughout your senior year as you pay very close attention to their deadlines. There goes that 'd' word again, lol. There are numerous kinds of scholarships such as merit-based, athletic, ethnicity/culture, grade level, socioeconomic status, contests, associations, etc. that covers everybody! All it requires is your dedication to finding & completing each application. You SHOULD NOT pay to apply for scholarships. Check out our FREE & NEW scholarship page coming soon! Subscribe to get free notification when the Scholarship Page is published & updated!
Retake SAT/ACT Test if Needed- If you have not acquired your ideal SAT/ACT score for the College you desire, consider retaking it after strengthening your weak areas. The more dedicated you are in preparing, the more improvements you can expect. According the Educational Testing Services (ETS), 50-100 points is the average combined improvement score on SAT. Points >100 are above average while points above 300 are rare. Though, no one can guarantee how well you will do, always do your very best after putting work in preparing. We currently tutor SAT/ACT. Let us know if you need our help.
This wraps up the month of January! Here is a flyer to recap. Later Gems!
