February- College Readiness

Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Hey Gems,

We are in the month of February! Where are my HS Seniors, aspiring Seniors and their parents? If you have not already done so, please read the previous post. These College readiness posts are created to keep you on track as you prepare to attend the College you desire.

By now, you should have applied to your top 5-10 colleges and have applied for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA). How are your grades? As you upkeep your grades for a competitive GPA, do not neglect your extracurricular involvement -- sports, music, community service, school clubs, plays etc. Colleges want to see you're a well-rounded student with great time management skills. Balance is the key!

We will be creating a list each month specifically for you until Graduation. Here is the checklist for this month:

February Checklist for Regular College Admissions

  1. Verify College Applications - After submitting your College Applications, most Colleges will send you a confirmation letter or email. Please contact each College to verify that your completed applications were received and is being processed. I can't tell you how many times I've heard students complaining they were not notified that their application was incomplete or not processed. Unfortunately due to many applicants applying monthly it is easy for yours to fall through the cracks. It is much easier to follow up with the admissions office in checking the status of your application. Most College Admissions offices have now made it easy for you to check the status online!

  2. Review Student Aid Report- Once you have completed your Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA), you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) detailing all your important information. Please review it carefully, correct any inaccurate information, sign and return as soon as possible. Missing or inaccurate information can cost you thousands of dollars!

  3. Continue Applying for Scholarships- How is the scholarship search and application process going? Are you submitting what is required by the deadlines? Each month, a new set of scholarships could be added. We advise to check weekly making sure you meet ALL the qualifications of every scholarship before applying. It doesn't make sense to put in a lot of work only to be denied the scholarship because you failed to read the qualifications first. Keep applying to increase your probability of success!

  4. Retake SAT/ACT Test if Needed- By now, If you still have not acquired your ideal SAT/ACT score for the College you desire, seriously consider getting a tutor before it's too late. You should have taken both tests and should be focusing to study for the test you scored the highest in. We currently tutor SAT/ACT. Let us know if you need our help.

This wraps up the month of February! Here is a flyer to recap. Later Gems!
